Is your house to be left empty for sometime while you leave town? That is when your apartment is susceptible to looters breaking in. Here is a bunch of things to help make your home safer.
* The best security for your apartment is to have a keeper or sitter at home. An apartment where someone is staying is very likely safer than an empty apartment. See if you can get a trusted friend or relative to hang out at your apartment while you are away.
* Halt your mail and newspaper delivery while you are away from home. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper tells potential burglars that your home is empty.
* If you maintain potted plants or a garden arrange for them to be kept well. Otherwise move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Plants dying slowly are a clue that the apartment is unoccupied.
* Use timers for tv and lights. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. The living room lights should come on at sundown. When it is time for bed the lights in your living room should be switched off and switch on the bedroom lights.
If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and you keep it on till you turn in the timer should stick to those times too. The living room light may be on but the lack of light from the tv can indicate that no one is really home.
* Ask a neighbor to drop in on your home on a regular basis. Windows being opened and closed etc are all signs that the house is inhabited.
* If you live on rent tell the landlord that you are going out of town. Your landlord may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have installed an alarm of protection system make sure the housesitter is comfortable with exactly how to operate it.
* See that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person responsbile for checking into the house must know who they should fill in if any issue should come up.
