Is your apartment to be left empty for many days while you go on vacation? That is when the house is most vulnerable to looters. Here is what to do to defend your home.
* The best deterrant is to have someone stay at your apartment. A house where someone is staying is commonly safer than an uninhabited home. Make arrangements for a friend or someone you trust to hang out at your home while you go on vacation.
* Temporarily stop mail and newspaper while you are on vacation. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up publicises that no one is home.
* If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road ask someone to maintain them. Or remove the potted plants away from sight. Untended plants are evidence that the house is empty.
* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. When you go to bed the living room should have lights off and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and keep it on till 10 the timer should do the same thing. The lights in the house may be on but the lack of light from the tv can give away that the apartment or home is empty.
* Arrange for a neighbor to drop in on your home now and then. Doors and windows being worked indicate that the house is occupied.
* If you live in a rented home you may want to notify your landlord that you will be out of station. Your homeowner may want to check on the home now and then.
* If you use any kind of security system make sure the homesitter is comfortable with how to operate it.
* Make certain that you leave your contact details with the house sitter. Whoever is checking on the home should be aware of who they should fill in if there is a problem.
