Is your apartment or home to be empty for sometime while you go on a holiday? That is the time it is susceptible to burglaries and housebreaks. Here is what to do to make your home safer.
* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to have a house sitter. An apartment where someone is staying is almost always safer than an uninhabited apartment. Make arrangements for a relative or a friend to live at your apartment while you are go away.
* Temporarily discontinue mail and newspaper delivery when the apartment is empty. Piles of newspaper lying around is a sign that the home is empty.
* If you have potted plants visible from outside have them kept by someone regularly. Or Else move the potted plants out of sight. Wilted plants inform housebreakers that the house is uninhabited.
* Use timers on the lights, radio and tv. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. When you normally go to bed put out the lights in your living room and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and it remains on till midnight have your timer do the same. Even if the lights are on the tv being turned off might be enough evidence that no one is actually home.
* Get a neighbor to drop in to your place often. Windows being opened and curtains being worked mean that the apartment or home is occupied.
* If you stay in a rented apartment let the owner know that the apartment will be empty. Your landlord may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you have a security system installed see that the house sitter recognizes precisely how to use it.
* Make it a point to see that the neighbor knows how to contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home must be well aware of who they should intimate should there be a problem.
