Is your house going to be empty for a few days while you take a vacation? That is when your home is vulnerable to burglars breaking and entering it. Here are several specific things you might want to do.
* The most effective defense is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone in is almost always safer than an apartment that is not occupied. Arrange for a friend to stay at your apartment while you travel.
* Temporarily stop newspaper and mail delivery when you go on vacation. An overflowing mailbox announces that the home is deserted.
* If you maintain a garden arrange for them to be watered and kept well. Or Else shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Plants wilting from lack of water are a sign that the home is empty.
* Put the lights and tv on timers. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. Subsequently set the timer to switch off living room lights and the bedroom lights should switch on.
If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and it remains on till 11 pm the timer must follow those timings. The lights may be on but the absence of the bluish tv glow might give away that the house is empty.
* Request a neighbor to drop in to your home regularly while you are away. Windows and curtains being opened are indications that somebody is home.
* If you live on rent notify the landlord that you are going away for a few days. The houseowner may want to check on the home now and then.
* If you use a home security system see that the housesitter recognises how to run it.
* Make certain that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home must be aware of who they should intimate should a problem crop up.
