* The better alternative is to get a home sitter. Having someone stay at your home is always safer than an unoccupied home. See if you can get a friend or someone you trust to stay at home at least during the nights while you are go away.

* Discontinue your newspaper delivery and mail delivery while you are away. Mail spilling out of the mailbox lets passersby know that your house is unoccupied.

* If you have potted plants visible from outside get someone to water them. Or ensure the potted plants are not visible from outside. Untended and wilted plants convey to would be burglars that the house is uninhabited.



* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. At sunset turn on the living room lights. Afterwards the living room lights should go off and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.

If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and have it on all evening till bedtime have your timer do the same. Even with lights switched on the lack of light from the tv can give away that your house is empty.

* Find out if a neighbor will agree to drop in to your apartment or home often. Windows being opened and closed etc convey that the home is occupied.

* If you live in a rented home let the owner know that you are traveling. Your landlord may want to check on the home now and then.

* If you use a security system make sure the apartment sitter is familiar with how to work it.

* Make certain that the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. The person responsbile for checking into the house should know who is to be informed should any issue crop up.
