Facts about business monitored security systems
Is your apartment to be left empty for more than a day or two while you travel on vacation? That is the time your apartment or home is most susceptible to burglars breaking and entering it. Here is what and ideas to deal with it.
* The best solution is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone at home is usually safer than a deserted home. Try to arrange for a relative or a friend to stay at home while you travel.
* Temporarily stop mail and newspaper while you are away from home. Untouched mail and newspaper publicises that the home is deserted.
* If you have a garden or potted plants arrange for them to be watered and kept well. Otherwise shift the potted plants where no one can see them. Untended plants are a hint that the home is unoccupied.
* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. At dusk the lights in the living room should be turned on. At your regular bedtime the living room lights should be turned off and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.
If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and it remains on till midnight the timer must follow those timings. The lights in the house may be on but the tv being off can indicate that no one is actually home.
* See if a neighbor can drop in on your home now and then. Windows being opened and curtains being worked are all signs that the house is occupied.
* If you rent the apartment tell the owner that the apartment will be empty. The landlord may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you have an alarm system installed make sure the housesitter is aware of how to make it run.
* See to it that the neighbor can reach you easily. The person watching over the house should be aware of who they should contact should a problem crop up.
