Is your apartment to be left empty for a few days while you take a break out of town? That is when it is vulnerable to burglaries and housebreaks. Here are several things you can do to deal with it.
* The most sensible alternative is to have a house sitter. A house where someone is staying is very likely safer than an uninhabited home. Arrange for a friend to stay at your house for the time you are traveling.
* Temporarily halt mail delivery and newspaper delivery when you go away. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up tells everyone that the home is deserted.
* If you have potted plants or a garden ask someone to maintain them. Alternatively shift the potted plants where no one can see them. Plants dying from lack of care are another sign that the home is empty.
* Use timers for tv and lights. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. When you normally retire the living room lights should be turned off and turn on the bedroom lights.
If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and keep it on till 10 have the timer set accordingly. Even if the lights are on the absence of the tv glow can be a sign that no one is really home.
* Request a neighbor to visit your apartment on a regular basis. Doors and windows being opened denote that the apartment or home is occupied.
* If you rent the apartment or house maybe you can tell the landlord that the house will be unoccupied. Your houseowner may want to check on it.
* If you have a burglar alarm installed make sure the home sitter knows precisely how to work it.
* See that you leave your contact details with the house sitter. Whoever is watching over the home must know who they should fill in should any problems come up.
