* The most effective solution is to arrange for a house sitter. Having someone in is commonly safer than an unoccupied apartment. See if you can get a friend or someone you trust to hang out at your apartment while you are away.
* Halt your mail and newspaper delivery when the house is empty. A mailbox filled to the brim is a sign that your home is empty.

* Put the lights and tv on timers. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. At dusk turn on the living room lights. When you go to bed the lights in your living room should be switched off and switch on the bedroom lights.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and have it on till bedtime set your timer to that schedule. Though the lights may be on the tv being off may lead someone to suspect that no one is home.
* Get a neighbor to come in and check out your house regularly. Doors and windows being worked indicate that the house is occupied.
* If you stay in a rented house it may be useful to tell the landlord that you will be away. The owner may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you use any kind of security system make certain that the the person who is doing the house sitting is comfortable with just how to work it.
* Make it a point to see that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home should be informed about who should be informed should any issues come up.
