Inputs on blog home network securityIs your house to be left unoccupied for sometime while you leave town? That is when your apartment is open to housebreaks. Here is what you might want to do. * The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to have a house sitter. Having someone stay at your home is very likely safer than a deserted home. Arrange for a relative or friend to remain at your apartment for the time you are traveling. * Temporarily stop mail and newspaper while you are away. An overflowing mailbox tells potential burglars that the home is empty. * If you maintain a garden have them watered by someone. Otherwise shift the potted plants where no one can see them. Dying plants convey that the apartment is unoccupied. * Use timers on the lights, radio and tv. Use light timers in more than one room. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. The timer should turn living room lights on at sundown. At bedtime the living room lights should go off and turn on the bedroom lights. If you turn tv on at 7 most days and it stays switched on till its time for you to turn in the timer should do the same thing. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of the tv may indicate to outsiders that this is an empty house. * See if a neighbor can come in and check out your apartment or home often. Doors and windows being opened are indications that the apartment or home is occupied. * If you rent a home it may be a good idea to notify the owner that you are going away for a few days. Your landlord may want to check on the apartment or home regularly. * If you have an active alarm system make sure the the person who is doing the house sitting recognises exactly how to use it. * Make it a point to see that the house sitter knows how to contact you. The person responsbile for checking into the house should be informed about who they should contact should a problem arise.
