Fact sheet on bc safe security home

Is your home going to be empty for several days while you and your family travel? That is when your home is open to burglaries and housebreaks. Here is a bunch of things to do to make your home safer.

* The most sensible alternative is to have a someone occupying the house. Having someone stay at your home is normally safer than an apartment that is not occupied. Arrange for a relative or a friend to hang out at your home when you are away.

* Temporarily halt newspaper and mail while you are on vacation. A mailbox filled to the brim is a sign that nobody is home.

* If you keep a garden or have potted plants that are visible arrange for them to be watered and kept well. Otherwise ensure that the potted plants are kept out of sight. Plants dying slowly give away that the home is untenanted.

* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Timers should run lights in several rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. At dusk the lights in the living room should be turned on. Subsequently at bedtime living room should turn dark and switch on the bedroom lights.

If you generally turn tv on at 8 pm most days and keep it on till 10 have the timer set accordingly. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of the tv's light shining through can be a sign that no one is actually home.

* See if a neighbor can visit your home frequently. Windows and curtains being worked is evidence that somebody is home.

* If you live on rent it is usually a good idea to tell the owner that you will be out of station. The houseowner may want to keep tabs on the apartment.

* If you have installed an alarm of protection system make sure the homesitter recognizes exactly how to run it.

* Make it a point to see that the house sitter knows how to contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment must be aware of who they should notify if there is a problem.
