* The better alternative is to get someone staying at home. Having someone in is usually safer than a home that is not occupied. Try to get a trustworthy friend to stay at home while you travel.
* Stop your newspaper delivery and mail delivery when the apartment is empty. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up publicises that no one is home.
* If you maintain potted plants or a garden get someone to water them. Otherwise keep the potted plants of of sight. Plants wilting slowly tell potential burglars that no one is home.
* Put lights and tv on timers. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. Use a natural looking sequence for lights. Turn on the living room lights at sunset. At your regular bedtime the lights in the living room should turn off and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you normally turn on the tv at 7 pm and it remains on till 11 pm the timer should do the same thing. Though the lights may be switched on the tv being turned off may lead to suspiscion that the house is empty.
* See if a neighbor will drop into your apartment on a regular basis. Windows being opened and closed etc mean that the house is not empty.
* If you stay in a rented house it may be useful to tell the landlord that you are going away for a few days. Your homeowner may want to keep tabs on the home.
* If you have a burglar alarm installed make certain that the house sitter knows how to run it.
* See to it that the neighbor knows how to contact you. The person checking on the house should be informed about who they should intimate should a problem arise.
