Is your apartment or home to be empty for a few days while you and your family vacation out of town? That is when your apartment is susceptible to being burglarized. Here are several things to do.
* The most sensible alternative is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone at home is normally safer than an unoccupied home. Make arrangements for a friend to stay at your apartment for the time you are traveling.
* Halt your newspaper delivery and mail delivery when you go away. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper lets passersby know that the house is empty.
* If you maintain a garden have them kept by someone regularly. Or ensure the potted plants are not visible from outside. Plants not being taken care of tell the observer that the house is empty.
* Use timers to operate lights and tv. Use timers on lights in several rooms. The timings for lights should look natural. Living room lights should come on at sundown. At the time you go to bed put out the lights in your living room and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and you keep it on till you turn in the timer must follow those timings. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of the tv may lead someone to suspect that this is an empty house.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to come in and check out your apartment now and then. Windows being opened and curtains being worked denote that the house is occupied.
* If you stay at a rented home notify the landlord that the apartment or home will be empty. The landlord may want to check on it.
* If you use a home security system make it a point to see that the the person who is doing the house sitting recognises just how to work it.
* See that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. The person responsbile for checking into the house should be aware of who should be informed should a problem arise.
