Is your home going to be empty for sometime while you travel? That is when it is susceptible to burglars breaking and entering it. Here is what you can do to deal with it.
* The most advisable solution is to have a someone occupying the house. Having someone stay at home is normally safer than a home or apartment that is unoccupied. Check if you can get a relative or a friend to hang out at your apartment for the time you are away.
* Temporarily stop mail and newspaper when the house is empty. Mail and newspapers lying around tells everyone that the house is empty.
* If you have a garden or potted plants have them watered by someone. Alternatively ensure the potted plants are not visible from outside. Plants dying slowly are a clue that the home is unoccupied.
* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Lights in multiple rooms should be on timers. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. At sunset turn on the living room lights. At bedtime the lights in your living room should be switched off and switch on the bedroom lights.
If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and you keep it on till you turn in set the timer accordingly. Even if the lights are on the tv being off can clue in someone that the house is empty.
* Ask a neighbor to drop in and check on your home on a regular basis. Doors being opened and closed and windows too denote that somebody is home.
* If you stay in a rented house you may want to notify your landlord that you are going on vacation. Your houseowner may want to check on it.
* If you have installed an alarm system see that the home sitter recognises how to make it work.
* Ensure that the house sitter can reach you easily. Whoever is checking on the home should know exactly who to call should there be a problem.
