Learn more about alarm systems riIs your home or apartment to be empty for some days or weeks while you and your family vacation out of town? That is when your home is vulnerable to looters. Here are several specific things to minimize chances of housebreaks. * The best deterrant is to have a house sitter. Having someone in is almost always safer than an uninhabited apartment. Make arrangements for a trustworthy friend to stay at home at least during the nights while you are away. * Discontinue your mail delivery and newspaper delivery while you are on vacation. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up is a sure sign that the home is empty. * If you maintain potted plants or a garden ensure that someone waters them. Or Else move the potted plants away from sight. Plants not being cared for are a hint that the home is untenanted. * Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. The timer should turn living room lights on at sundown. Around your normal sleeptime the living room should have lights off and turn on the bedroom lights. If you usually turn the tv on at 8 pm and keep it on till 10 have your timer do the same. The lights may be on but the lack of the tv's bluish glow may lead to suspiscion that this house is unoccupied. * Find out if a neighbor will agree to visit your house regularly. Windows and curtains being opened gives evidence that the house is occupied. * If you rent the apartment or house tell the landlord that you will be away. The landlord may want to keep tabs on the apartment. * If you have an alarm system installed see to it that the person who is house sitting is comfortable with exactly how to operate it. * Make sure the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment must know who should be informed should a problem arise.
