Is your house to be left unoccupied for even a few days while you travel? That is when your home tends to be open to burglars breaking in. Here is what to help make your home safer.
* The best defense for your home is to get someone staying at home. Having someone stay at home is almost always safer than an empty house. Try to arrange for a friend or relative to stay at your house while you are away.
* Discontinue the mail delivery and newspaper delivery for the entire time you are away. Unread newspapers and an overflowing mailbox advertises that your house is unoccupied.
* If you have potted plants or a garden get someone to water them. Otherwise keep the potted plants of of sight. Untended and dying plants convey to would be burglars that the house is not occupied.
* Put lights and tv on timers. Lights should be on timers in multiple rooms. Use a natural looking sequence for lights. At dusk the lights in the living room should be turned on. At the time you turn in the living room lights should be put out and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.
If you turn tv on at 7 most days and have it on all evening till bedtime the timer should do the same thing. The lights may be on but the absence of the bluish tv glow might be enough evidence that the apartment or home is empty.
* Request a neighbor to come in to your apartment now and then. Windows and curtains being worked are signs that the home is inhabited.
* If you live in a rented apartment maybe you can tell the landlord that you are traveling. Your landlord may want to check on the home now and then.
* If you have a burglar alarm installed make certain that the the person who is doing the house sitting is familiar with exactly how to use it.
* Make sure the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home should know who they should contact if any issue should come up.
