Is your house going to be empty for more than a day or two while you go out of town? That is the time your apartment or home is vulnerable to thieves breaking in. Here are several things you should consider doing.
* The best solution is to have a sitter at home. Having someone stay at your home is always safer than a house that is empty. Try arranging for a relative or friend to stay at your apartment when you are traveling.
* Temporarily discontinue mail and newspaper delivery when you go on vacation. Piles of newspaper lying around informs potential thieves that the house is empty.
* If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road have them kept by someone regularly. Or remove the potted plants away from sight. Plants not being cared for imply that the apartment is empty.
* Use timers to work tv and lights. Use light timers in more than one room. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. When you normally hit the sack the lights in the living room should turn off and the lightsin the bedroom should switch on.
If you turn on tv at 7 pm every day and have it on till midnight or so the timer should stick to those times too. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of the tv might indicate that the home is empty.
* Arrange for a neighbor to drop in to your home frequently. Doors and windows being worked indicate that the home is occupied.
* If you rent a home notify the landlord that the house will be empty. Your houseowner may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have an alarm or protection system installed ensure that the home sitter is comfortable with just how to work it.
* See that the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. The person checking on the house must be well aware of who should be informed should any issues come up.
