Is your home or apartment to be empty for a few days while you go on an outing? That is when the house is open to burglaries. Here are several things to help harden your home against burglaries.
* The best security for your apartment is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone stay at home is almost always safer than an uninhabited home. See if you can get a trusted friend or relative to live at your apartment while you are away.
* Stop your mail and newspaper while you are on vacation. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper lets everyone know that the home is unoccupied.
* If you have potted plants that are visible get someone to water them. Otherwise move the potted plants out of sight. Plants not being taken care of are a hint that no one is home now.
* Put the lights and tv on timers. Lights should be on timers in multiple rooms. Use a natural looking sequence for lights. Turn on the living room lights at sunset. Subsequently the lights in the living room should turn off and the lightsin the bedroom should switch on.
If you normally turn on the tv at 7 pm and you watch it till 11 pm the timer must follow those timings. Though the lights are on the lack of light from the tv can indicate that the apartment or home is empty.
* Get a neighbor to drop in to your home now and then. Windows being opened and curtains being worked points out that the home is occupied.
* If you rent the home perhaps you can let the owner or landlord know that you are going away for a few days. The homeowner may want to check on the home regularly.
* If you have an alarm or protection system installed make certain that the person who is house sitting is familiar with how it is to be used.
* Make sure the house sitter knows how to contact you. Whoever is checking on the home must know who they should intimate should a problem crop up.
