* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to have a someone occupying the house. Having someone stay at your home is usually safer than an unoccupied apartment. Try to arrange for a relative to hang out at your home when you are traveling.
* Discontinue your newspaper and mail when you go on vacation. A mailbox filled to the brim lets passersby know that the house is unoccupied.
* If you keep a garden have them watered by someone. Alternatively move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Wilted plants inform housebreakers that the home is untenanted.
* It is a good idea to use timers on lights and tv. Use timers on lights in several rooms. The way the lights are switched on and off should look natural. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. When you normally go to bed put out the lights in your living room and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you usually turn the tv on at 8 pm and have it on till midnight or so set the timer accordingly. Even if the lights are on the absence of the bluish tv glow can clue in someone that no one is actually home.
* See if a neighbor will drop in to your house regularly. Doors and windows being opened is evidence that the house is not empty.
* If you rent a home let the owner know that you are going out of town. The homeowner may want to keep tabs on the apartment.
* If you have installed a security system ensure that the the person who is doing the house sitting recognizes exactly how to run it.
* See that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home should know who they should contact if any issue should come up.
