Is your house going to be empty for a few days while you and your family travel? That is when your home is most susceptible to thieves breaking in. Here is a bunch of things to minimize chances of housebreaks.

* The most advisable solution is to arrange for a house sitter. A house where someone is staying is normally safer than an uninhabited apartment. Arrange for a relative or a friend to stay at home while you are go away.

* Stop the newspaper and mail delivery when you go away. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper announces that nobody is home.

* If you have a garden or potted plants ask someone to maintain them. Otherwise ensure the potted plants are not visible from outside. Plants dying from lack of care are evidence that the home is unoccupied.

* Timers on lights and tv will help. Lights should be on timers in multiple rooms. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. Living room lights should come on at sundown. At your regular sleeptime the living room lights should be put out and switch on the bedroom lights.

If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and it stays on till bed time the timer should do the same thing. Even with lights switched on the absence of the tv can indicate that your house is empty.

* Find out if a neighbor will agree to drop in on your apartment on a regular basis. Windows being opened and closed etc is evidence that the house is occupied.

* If you rent a home you may want to notify your landlord that you will be out of station. Your homeowner may want to check on it.

* If you use a security system make certain that the home sitter is familiar with just how to use it.

* Ensure that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. The person responsbile for checking into the house should know who they should contact if there is a problem.
