Is your house to be left unoccupied for sometime while you take a much needed break away from town? That is when your home tends to be vulnerable to burglaries. Here are several specific things you can do.
* The most effective defense is to have a someone occupying the house. Having someone stay at your home is very likely safer than a home or apartment that is unoccupied. See if you can get a relative or friend to stay at your apartment when you are away.
* Temporarily discontinue newspaper delivery and mail delivery while you are on vacation. A mailbox filled to the brim tells everyone that no one is home.
* If you have potted plants or a garden have them maintained by someone. Or Else ensure that the potted plants are kept out of sight. Plants dying slowly are an indication that no one is home now.
* Use timers for tv and lights. Use light timers in more than one room. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. At sundown the living room lights should switch on. When it is time for bed living room should turn dark and turn on the bedroom lights.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and have it on till midnight or so have the timer set accordingly. The living room light may be on but the lack of the tv's bluish glow might indicate that the home is unoccupied.
* Request a neighbor to come in to your apartment now and then. Doors and windows being worked are indications that the house is inhabited.
* If you rent the apartment or house you may want to let your landlord know that you will be away. The houseowner may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you have installed a home security system see that the the person who is doing the house sitting knows how to operate it.
* See to it that you leave your contact details with the neighbor. The person watching over the house must be well aware of who they should notify if any issue should come up.
